About Roatan

Tucked away in the Caribbean lies Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands, and one of the world's best kept secrets. Privileged by its location along the Mesoamerican Reef, this 77km-long island is known for its beautiful white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, breathtaking sunsets, and to divers from all over the world who come to explore the treasures buried beneath the waves.

Brief History of Roatán

In general the Bay Islands refer to the archipelago comprised of the islands of Roatán, Útila, Guanaja, and numerous islets and cays, which were inhabited in principle by the Mayas, then by the payas, in the 16th century Spanish conquerors arrived who brought african slaves as part of the crew. Later in the seventeenth century the island was invaded by the English. On March 2, 1782, the Spaniards recovered Roatan and destroyed 500 houses; by 1788 many Englishmen abandoned Roatan; in 1796 they seized the islands again and between 1827 and 1834 English began to return to Roatan, which ruled until April 21, 1861, when the government of Honduras and the United Kingdom government signed a treaty to return the Bay Islands to Honduras for being in their territorial waters. It is true that in their lands the sailors without flag also hid their treasures or took shelter of the storms, but today, unfortunately, of that past adventurer only the names that are used to call to taverns, hotels and restaurants remain.
